61st Annual Pokkecetu Tournament

Father’s Day and the U.S. Open did not hamper play this past weekend at the Gil Morgan Municipal Golf Course in Wewoka.  The 61st Annual Pokkecetu Tournament was a huge success this year, with one of the biggest crowds in the past five years, according to Wayne Chambers, President of the Wewoka Golf Association.  Friday’s Pokkecetu Scramble kicked off the three day weekend at 10:00 am with a maxed out roster of 90 players.  There were 119 golfers who endured two days of medal play on June 16th and 17th.  Golfers were grouped into eight different flights based on their handicaps.  Saturday morning tee times began at 7am with Flights D, E, F, & G playing, as well as a high school group consisting of three boys and one girl.  Afternoon tee times began at 12:23 pm with Flights A, B, C teeing off first and the Championship Flight teeing off last.

Dr. Gil Morgan was present Saturday evening to host a golf clinic at 6 pm on the driving range at the course.  A large crowd was in attendance to watch, listen and learn from the master golfer who began his pro career in 1973 and now resides in Edmond.  Morgan gave tips on how to hit low fades, long drives, and chips that would roll onto a green with ease.  Morgan demonstrated the clubs that he uses on tour professionally, from his Titleist irons to his Taylor Made R11S and RocketBallz drivers.  He emphasized that once the mechanics of golf are understood, a golfer then has more freedom to develop any type of swing that works best for them.  Morgan’s clinic was followed at 7 pm with a tournament dinner held at the Wewoka Country Club that was catered with great barbeque from Bosco Joe’s of Seminole.  Prizes were awarded during the dinner, including a free entry for next year’s tournament won by Bryan Williams of Wewoka.  There was a silent auction to raise money for the Wewoka Golf Association that was sponsored by Dr. Gil Morgan.  Included in the auction were personal items belonging to Gil such as hats, shoes, gloves, and other articles of clothing.  The evening’s event was a great success for the WGA.

Sunday’s medal play teed off bright and early at 7 am.  Golf enthusiast’s enjoyed terrific weather and decent course conditions playing hard to end the day with the lowest score possible.  As players putted out on the 18th hole, score cards were turned in and combined to create a two day total.

The Championship Flight consisted of eighteen players who shot a two day total ranging from 148 to 167.  There was a tie for first place between Tyler Hargus, a University of Central Oklahoma student, and Jonathan Pennington of Tahlequah, originally from Wewoka.  Both respectively turned in a score 148.  Pennington and Hargus both scored 73 on Saturday and 75 on Sunday.  With excitement in the air, they played a sudden death playoff on the 1st hole to break the tie.  Both men teed off and hit their second shots onto the collars surrounding the greens.  They both chipped onto the green with each having putts stopping about one yard short of the hole.  Pennington failed to make his par attempt. Hargus made his putt for par and won the sudden death playoff to win the 62nd Annual Pokkecetu Tournament.
